Advent’s First Annual Golf Outing: Made for the Shade

Boca Raton, Florida   Advent Lutheran Early Childhood School’s first annual golf outing proved to be a day of fun and friendly competition as 80 golfers vied for prizes in the main event: a shotgun scramble.  The event, which  raised more than $17,500 for new shade structures for the school’s playground, included individual competitions such as “Beat the Pro” and “Meet & Beat the New Headmaster” in addition to a putting contest, a silent auction and raffles prizes.   The golf outing was held Friday May 16 at the Boca Country Club.

Foursome Joe Olivella, Robert Richards, David Tandy and Troy Wheat took top honors in the shotgun scramble with a score of 60.    Felipe Bazua edged out Jody Allen to win the putting contest as George Arbelaez and James Graber captured the “closest to the pin” award at holes 8 and 17, respectively.  Doug Campbell sent his ball sailing to win the longest dive contest while newly appointed Headmaster Paul Humphreys held his own against all the golfers who tried to “beat the headmaster” in another distance competition.

“They say golf is a religious experience. I must agree,” quipped The Reverend Dr. Andrew D. Hagen, Pastor of Advent Ministries.  “Today, I heard praises being shouted from the tee box, grown men crying for mercy in the rough, muttered prayers in the sand traps, and Hallelujah’s on the greens. More men called on the name of the Lord today than at most churches on Sunday.”

“We thank all of our sponsors for making this event a success,” said Sally Whitney, Principal of Advent Lutheran Early Childhood School.   “We especially thank our title sponsor SRD Building Corp., along with our lunch sponsor T.R. Sales, Inc. and our awards sponsor Quality Kid Produce.  The generous support of our sponsors and participants has enabled us to provide more shaded areas for our children while they play outdoors.”

The Advent Lutheran Early Childhood School was founded in 1968 by the members of Advent Lutheran Church in response to the community's need for high quality Christian education.  Advent's Christ-centered approach to learning has provided a strong educational and spiritual foundation for thousands of children in a loving and nurturing environment.  Advent offers programs for children as young as six-weeks old through prekindergarten.
