A Day of Giving

Boca Raton, Florida  Students at Advent Lutheran Elementary and Middle School in Boca Raton recently learned first hand what it means to “give of oneself.”  On Thursday, March 27, the students in kindergarten through 8th grade participated in Advent’s first annual “Day of Giving” by working directly with local non-profit organizations.

Advent’s second grade students brightened the day of seniors at The Alzheimer's Community Care day care with songs, games, and manicures while third graders visited the Boca Rehab Center to play games and read to patients. Kindergarteners planted flowers in pots they painted and delivered them to neighbors; fourth grade students planted flowers and spread mulch at Advent Square Independent Retirement Community.  Fifth grade students traveled to Florence Fuller Child Development Center to bring pre-packaged snacks and 300 children’s books and to read to children at the Center.  Students in sixth grade turned three dozen new and used t-shirts into diapers for babies in Honduras.  Seventh graders delivered fire safety information to neighbors and home-made treats to the local fire and police stations.  First graders brought popcorn and refreshments to Advent’s Early Childhood School while eighth graders made 160 sandwiches and delivered them to Boca Helping Hands and the Boys & Girls Club.

“All of these projects really helped our students personalize the act of giving,” said Laura Bluhm, Principal of Advent Lutheran Middle School.  “It is one thing to talk about giving or to simply ask students to give money; it is an entirely different matter when we put our plans into actions.  The purpose of our ‘Day of Giving’ was to really connect our students with our community to discover the joy that comes with helping someone else.”

Advent Lutheran School, located at 300 East Yamato Road in Boca Raton, teaches children in kindergarten through 8th grade.  Advent’s Early Childhood Center serves infants through Pre-kindergarten.  For more information about Advent’s schools and programs, please call 561-395-3631 or visit www.AdventLifenet.org.
